Column Arts Agency & Mark Salmon Create ‘Converge: Illustration On Photography Exhibition’

Column Arts Agency have teamed up with portrait photographer Mark Salmon to create ‘Converge: Illustration On Photography Exhibition’.

Commissioned for Birmingham’s annual visual arts and pop culture festival Eye Candy, Converge explores how the mediums of photography and illustration can work together.

The exhibition consists of a series of photographs of fantastic Birmingham Royal Ballet dancers Kit Holder, Celine Gittens, and Anna Monleon.

The dancers have posed in dynamic and contorted positions, providing a warped and usual canvas for the Birmingham-based illustrators to work on.

Six of the Column artists have worked on the photographs, producing ideas that are inspired by the shapes of the dancers bodies and the productions they have appeared in.

The participating artists are Trou, Joshua Billingham, Sweaty Eskimo, Laura Tinald, Joel Millerchip, and Guy McKinley.

Converge attendees will also have the opportunity to experience this process live on opening night. They will be able to have their photo taken from the exhibition from the photographer, which will then be projected and manipulated in real-time by one of the Column illustrators. They will then be able to take their portrait away for FREE.

There will also be live drawing from Joshua and Joel on Friday and Saturday respectively from 11am to noon.

William Astbury, Founder of Column Arts Agency, said: “We had been looking to collaborate with Mark and had couple of ideas of what we wanted to do.

“When the team behind Eye Candy Festival invited us to take part it seemed like the perfect chance to work with Mark and implement this concept.

“I am really looking forward to seeing how the illustrators interpret the brief and how their different styles interact with the portaits.”

Mark said: “In every sense of the word this project has been a collaboration with the dancers, the artists and myself.

“Typically I work on my photos from pre to post production but this time there is an element of the unknown and an anticipation of the final outcome. This is an exciting and fresh project for me and I am looking forward to seeing how the artists use and interpret the photographs.”
